How to Choose a Battery-Backup Sump Pump

Compare pump curves, not the largest number on the box.

Measure the discharge path

Record:

  • Vertical distance from pump outlet to highest pipe point
  • Horizontal distance
  • Elbows
  • Pipe diameter
  • Check valves
  • Exterior termination
  • Freeze exposure

A restrictive or partially blocked discharge reduces real flow.

Do not route backup discharge into:

  • Sanitary sewer where prohibited
  • Foundation area
  • Frozen outlet
  • Location that returns water to the sump

Use a plumber where code or system design is uncertain.

Independent pump versus inverter

Dedicated DC backup pump

Uses a separate 12-volt pump, float, controller, battery, and charger.

Advantages:

  • Independent pump
  • Lower DC power demand
  • Continues if the primary motor fails

Battery inverter for the primary pump

Converts battery power to AC and runs an approved primary pump.

Advantages:

  • Can preserve the main pump’s capacity
  • May support sewage or larger pumps where designed

Tradeoffs:

  • Larger battery demand
  • Compatibility limits
  • More complex power electronics

Liberty sells both dedicated DC backup pumps and inverter systems intended for specified pump loads.

Choose the correct battery

Common options include:

  • Flooded deep-cycle lead-acid
  • AGM standby battery
  • Manufacturer-specific battery

Compare:

  • Required group size
  • Amp-hour capacity
  • Ventilation
  • Maintenance
  • Terminal type
  • Charger compatibility
  • Expected runtime
  • Replacement availability

Do not substitute an automotive starting battery merely because it is 12 volts.

Manufacturers often specify deep-cycle or dedicated standby batteries engineered for repeated backup operation.

Runtime claims require context

Runtime depends on:

  • Water inflow
  • Pump duty cycle
  • Discharge height
  • Battery capacity
  • Battery age
  • Temperature
  • Charger condition

A claim that a system runs “for days” usually means intermittent operation, not uninterrupted pumping at maximum load.

FEMA warns that battery backups may last only hours during long-duration events and may need another backup-power plan.

Require alarms and monitoring

Useful alerts include:

  • Backup pump activation
  • Low battery
  • Loose battery connection
  • Charger failure
  • High water
  • Failed float
  • Remote notification

An internet alert is useful only when:

  • Router has backup power
  • Internet service remains available
  • Account is active
  • Notification reaches a monitored device

Keep a local audible alarm.

Basin and float clearance

The backup float must move independently.

Water-powered backup systems require adequate municipal water pressure and do not work during a power outage on a private well unless the well itself remains powered.
