How to Clean a Dryer Moisture Sensor Without Damaging It

Turn the dryer off and unplug it.

Locate the moisture-sensor bars through the exact model manual.

Remove loose lint with a vacuum or soft cloth, then wipe residue using only the model’s approved cleaning method.

Find the exact sensor location

Sensor bars may be beside the lint-screen housing, on the front bulkhead inside the drum, near the door, or integrated into another drum component.

They often appear as two parallel metal strips.

Do not assume every piece of metal inside the drum is a moisture sensor.

Record:

  • Manufacturer
  • Model
  • Serial number
  • Sensor location
  • Approved cleaner
  • Cleaning interval

Disconnect power

Turn the dryer off and unplug it by gripping the plug.

When the appliance is hardwired or the plug is inaccessible, switch off the identified breaker.

Do not rely only on the control-panel power button.

Do not move or disconnect a gas dryer’s supply line for routine sensor cleaning. If access requires disturbing gas fittings, use qualified service.

Vacuum loose lint

Use:

  • Vacuum crevice tool
  • Soft brush attachment
  • Clean dry microfiber cloth

Remove lint around the sensor bars, lint housing, drum edge, and door opening.

Do not push lint into openings.

Remove residue gently

Dryer sheets and liquid softeners can leave a film.

When the manual permits damp cleaning:

  1. Apply a small amount of approved mild soap and water to a soft cloth.
  2. Wring the cloth out thoroughly.
  3. Wipe the sensor bars.
  4. Wipe again with a clean damp cloth.
  5. Dry completely.

Do not pour or spray cleaner inside the dryer.

Do not use sandpaper, steel wool, an abrasive pad, a knife, solvent, flammable cleaner, oven cleaner, or conductive metal brush.

An abrasive can change the sensor surface, remove a coating, or leave conductive debris.

Clean the lint screen too

Remove lint after every load.

When residue coats the screen:

  1. Wash it with warm water.
  2. Use a soft brush where approved.
  3. Rinse.
  4. Dry completely.
  5. Reinstall.

Hold the screen under running water after cleaning. Water should pass through the mesh rather than bead across a waxy film.

Test an automatic cycle

After reassembly:

  1. Restore power.
  2. Use an automatic or sensor cycle.
  3. Dry a medium load of similar fabrics.
  4. Avoid mixing one heavy wet towel with several nearly dry lightweight items.
  5. Confirm the cycle adjusts and stops appropriately.

Very small loads may not contact the bars consistently. Use timed drying for loads the manual identifies as unsuitable for sensor cycles.

Sensor trouble versus airflow trouble

Clothes remaining wet can also result from:

  • Blocked lint screen
  • Crushed vent
  • Excessively long duct
  • Blocked exterior hood
  • Failed heat source
  • Overloaded drum
  • Wrong cycle

Cleaning the sensor does not correct a blocked exhaust system.

Error codes

Some dryers display a moisture-sensor fault after repeated loads fail to register sensor information.

Persistent faults require model-specific diagnosis.

Record the code, cycle, load type, whether the bars were cleaned, whether timed drying works, and whether airflow is normal.

Do not replace the sensor solely from one unusually dry or wet load.

Call for service when

  • Sensor bars are loose
  • Wiring is visible
  • Error code returns
  • Automatic cycles stop immediately
  • Dryer never stops
  • Burning odor appears
  • Dryer overheats
  • Gas odor is present

Bottom line

Unplug the dryer, identify the actual sensor bars, remove lint, wipe approved residue gently, and test an appropriate automatic load.

The sensor needs clean contact with damp fabric. It does not need to be polished with industrial abrasives until it looks ready for a museum display.
