How to Choose a Water Filter That Actually Removes What You Need

Identify the water problem first, then verify that the exact filter model and replacement cartridge are certified by an accredited third party for the specific reduction claim you need. A generic logo or the word purified is not enough.

For a private well, follow state or local health-department testing guidance and use an appropriately certified laboratory. Testing needs can change after flooding, construction, a new nearby contamination source, or a change in taste, odor, or color.

Do not choose treatment from appearance alone. Clear water can contain dissolved contaminants, while cloudy water can sometimes be harmless air.

A standard number is not the whole claim

Filter packaging often references NSF/ANSI standards. Those standards contain different scopes and optional contaminant-reduction claims.

The product record must identify the exact claim. A filter certified for chlorine taste and odor does not automatically reduce lead, PFAS, nitrate, arsenic, microorganisms, or every other substance mentioned in water-treatment marketing.

EPA’s current lead-filter tool recommends checking for an accredited certification to NSF/ANSI Standard 53 with an explicit lead-reduction claim and Standard 42 Class I particulate reduction for the covered point-of-use filters. [2]

Lead reduction

For lead, verify:

  • Complete filter-system model.
  • Replacement cartridge model.
  • Certification body.
  • Standard and lead-reduction claim.
  • Rated capacity.
  • Required replacement schedule.

Do not assume that a refrigerator or pitcher filter removes lead because it improves taste.

EPA also advises following the manufacturer’s installation, flushing, and replacement instructions. A filter used beyond its rated life can become less effective. [2]

PFAS and other chemical claims

When PFAS, a volatile organic compound, pesticide, or another chemical is the reason for selecting treatment, look for that exact reduction claim in the current certification directory.

Certification criteria and federal drinking-water limits can be updated on different schedules. Check current EPA, state, utility, and certifier guidance rather than relying on old packaging or an undated image.

Microbial contamination requires specialized treatment

An ordinary carbon pitcher is not designed to make microbiologically unsafe water safe.

A boil-water advisory, contaminated well, or flood may require boiling, disinfection, ultraviolet treatment, a certified purifier, source repair, or emergency bottled water.

Follow the water utility or health department during an advisory. Do not substitute an ordinary refrigerator or faucet filter unless its exact certified use covers the hazard.

Point-of-use versus whole-house treatment

Point-of-use systems include pitchers, faucet-mounted filters, countertop units, under-sink systems, and refrigerator filters. They treat the smaller volume used for drinking and cooking.

A whole-house system treats water entering the building. It may be appropriate for sediment, hardness, odor, or a contaminant affecting plumbing or bathing, but it must provide enough flow for the entire household.

Do not install whole-house treatment without understanding drainage, disinfectant removal, bacterial growth, pressure loss, and local plumbing requirements.

Search the official product directory

Use the certification body’s directory and match:

  • Manufacturer.
  • Brand.
  • Exact model.
  • Replacement cartridge.
  • Contaminant claim.
  • Rated capacity.
  • Flow rate.
  • Current certification status.

A copied certification image is not the directory. A replacement cartridge that physically fits may not have the original certification.

Replacement requirements matter

Record the rated gallons, time limit, flow reduction, prefilter requirements, reverse-osmosis wastewater where applicable, sanitizing requirements, professional service needs, and replacement availability.

Use the rated capacity or replacement indicator rather than taste alone to decide when a cartridge is exhausted.

Warning signs in substitute cartridges

Be cautious when a product has altered certification marks, no exact model number, vague “tested to standards” wording, no performance data sheet, implausibly long capacity, or no identifiable manufacturer.

Verify every substitute cartridge separately.
