How to Check a Used Refrigerator Before You Buy It

Verify the exact model and recall status, then make the refrigerator prove that it can hold 40°F or below and the freezer about 0°F. Inspect seals, wiring, cooling behavior, corrosion, water systems, dimensions, and total delivery and repair cost before paying.

Similar-looking models can use different compressors, ice makers, control boards, filters, and recall remedies. A description such as French-door refrigerator is not enough to identify parts or safety history.

Check recalls

Do not buy a recalled unit based on the seller’s statement that it has never caused a problem. A recall concerns the product population and identified hazard, not the seller’s personal luck.

Test temperature properly

The refrigerator should be running normally before inspection.

Place appliance thermometers in the center of the refrigerator compartment and freezer. Allow enough time for temperatures to stabilize. A brief test immediately after plugging in an empty machine proves little.

Target:

  • Refrigerator: 40°F or below.
  • Freezer: about 0°F.

Check more than one refrigerator zone when possible because a blocked vent or failing fan can create warm areas.

Inspect the door gaskets

Look for tears, cracks, hardened rubber, mold, warping, gaps, loose corners, doors that drop or rub, and a French-door center flap that does not close.

Close a strip of paper in several points around the gasket. It should resist gentle pulling reasonably consistently.

A gasket may be replaceable, but check part availability and cost before purchasing.

Listen to the compressor and fans

Ordinary refrigerators produce compressor hum, fan noise, refrigerant movement, ice-maker sounds, and expansion clicks.

Warning patterns include repeated clicking without sustained cooling, grinding, screeching, heavy vibration, fans striking ice or plastic, continuous operation without reaching temperature, or a compressor that becomes extremely hot.

Open and close the doors and confirm the lights, switches, controls, and alarms behave normally.

Inspect the rear and bottom

Unplug the unit before touching or closely inspecting accessible rear components.

Look for burn marks, melted wiring, improvised splices, damaged cord, missing ground pin, oil residue, corrosion, pest droppings, nesting material, bent tubing, punctured cabinet, water damage, and a condenser packed with debris.

Do not touch refrigerant tubing, capacitors, terminals, or exposed wiring.

Check the interior

Inspect shelves, bins, drawers, vents, controls, light covers, drain channels, freezer panels, ice buildup, rust, cracks, persistent odor, mold, and insect evidence.

Replacement bins and shelves can be surprisingly expensive. Price every missing component before deciding that the appliance is a bargain.

Test water and ice systems

For a model with a dispenser or ice maker, confirm the water-line size and connector, no leakage, filter model and cost, dispenser operation, ice-bin condition, and absence of cracked tubing.

A used refrigerator should receive a new compatible certified filter and model-approved sanitation before drinking from it.

Compare energy use

Find the original EnergyGuide information or manufacturer specification and calculate the likely cost using the local electricity rate.

The FTC explains that EnergyGuide labels use standardized energy consumption and cost assumptions to help compare models. [3]

Do not compare old and new label dollar estimates directly without recalculating them using the same electricity price.

Measure the space and route

Record width, height, depth, door-opening clearance, hinge side, handle depth, ventilation clearance, water hookup, outlet location, hallway width, stair turns, elevator size, and building delivery rules.

Confirm whether doors must be removed for transport and whether qualified reassembly is available.

Include the full transaction cost

Add purchase price, delivery, stairs, door removal, disposal of the old unit, water-line installation, filter, missing shelves, cleaning, energy use, likely repair, and return risk.

A free refrigerator requiring a truck, two shelves, and a compressor repair has become economically creative.

Protect the transaction

Obtain a receipt listing the seller and buyer, date, price, brand, model, serial number, included parts, known defects, return period, warranty, and the seller’s representation that the appliance is theirs to sell.
