How to Choose an Extension Cord Without Overheating It

Choose a cord whose listed ampere or watt capacity exceeds the connected load at the required length.
Then verify:
- Indoor or outdoor rating
- Grounded or two-wire design
- Wire gauge
- Length
- Plug and receptacle configuration
- Recognized safety listing
- Jacket condition
- Strain relief
CPSC treats minimum wire size, strain relief, polarity, continuity, protective outlet features, and outdoor jacketing as essential extension-cord safety characteristics.
Determine the load
Use the appliance’s:
- Amperes
- Watts
- Voltage
- Manual requirement
When only watts are listed:
Current (I) = power (P) ÷ voltage (V).
For a 1,200-watt appliance on 120 volts:
1,200 W ÷ 120 V = 10 A.
Choose a cord rated above the expected current.
Do not combine several devices without adding their simultaneous load.
Understand wire gauge
American Wire Gauge numbers run opposite ordinary intuition:
- Lower gauge number means thicker conductor.
- Thicker conductors generally carry more current with less voltage drop.
- Longer cords usually require heavier conductors for the same load.
Use the manufacturer’s cord chart for the appliance and distance.
Do not substitute a household rule of thumb for the tool’s instructions, especially with:

Choose the shortest practical cord

Indoor versus outdoor

Grounded equipment needs a grounded cord
Use a three-wire grounded cord for equipment with a grounding plug.

OSHA’s flexible-cord guidance calls for three-wire grounded extension cords in applicable work settings.
The same electrical principle applies at home even when nobody is filling out workplace paperwork.
Inspect before every use
Look for:

- Crushed section
- Exposed conductor
- Loose plug
- Bent pin
- Missing ground
- Melted plastic
- Scorching
- Improvised repair
- Connector that feels hot
OSHA requires visual inspection of flexible cords for damaged insulation, crushed jackets, missing pins, and other defects before use in covered workplaces.
Remove a damaged household cord from service.
Tape does not restore the cord’s original insulation, strain relief, or listing.
Do not route it dangerously
Do not:
- Run under rugs
- Pin beneath furniture
- Staple to walls
- Hang from nails
- Pass through a doorway where it is crushed
- Bury it
- Use as permanent wiring
OSHA specifically prohibits fastening cords with staples or hanging them from nails or wire in construction settings.
Never buy a male-to-male cord
A cord with exposed male plugs on both ends can energize exposed prongs and is commonly used for dangerous generator backfeeding.
CPSC warned consumers in March 2026 that these products have no legitimate household use and create electrocution, fire, and carbon-monoxide risks.
Do not use, sell, or donate one.
Appliances that commonly prohibit extension cords
Many high-power appliances require direct wall connection, including numerous:
- Space heaters
- Air conditioners
- Refrigerators
- Microwaves
- Laundry appliances
- Cooking appliances
Follow the exact manual.
The correct response to a cord that will not reach is often a properly installed receptacle, not a thicker orange cord becoming permanent architecture.

Buy a traceable listed product, inspect it, keep connectors dry, and stop using any cord that becomes hot or damaged.
The extension cord extends electricity. It does not extend the branch circuit’s capacity, the appliance warranty, or the laws of resistance.
