CPSC expanded a pressure-washer recall in May 2026 because certain electric-start gasoline models could self-start, creating a severe carbon-monoxide risk if stored in a confined space.
Compare PSI and GPM
PSI
Higher pressure can remove bonded soil but increases the risk of:
- Etching concrete
- Splintering wood
- Removing paint
- Damaging siding
- Cutting seals
- Forcing water behind cladding
GPM
Higher flow moves loosened dirt and covers a larger area faster.
A machine with moderate pressure and better flow may clean broad surfaces more efficiently than a high-PSI unit with minimal flow.
Do not multiply PSI and GPM into a marketing “cleaning units” number and assume it captures surface safety or pump quality.
Choose nozzles carefully
Common quick-connect nozzle angles include:
- 0 degrees
- 15 degrees
- 25 degrees
- 40 degrees
- Low-pressure soap nozzle
Manufacturers such as Generac commonly package several nozzle angles because the spray pattern materially changes concentration and surface effect.
Start with:
- Widest appropriate nozzle
- Low setting
- Large distance
- Hidden test area
Move closer gradually.
Simpson warns users to begin well away from the surface and stop when damage appears.
Avoid a zero-degree nozzle for ordinary household surfaces unless the manufacturer and task specifically justify it.
Check the water supply
The hose and supply must deliver enough clean water for the pump.
Some gasoline pressure-washer manuals require a supply exceeding the machine’s rated GPM to avoid starving the pump. One Simpson manual, for example, specifies at least five gallons per minute at an inlet pressure of twenty pounds per square inch for the covered models.
Use the exact manual.
Do not run the pump dry.
Hose, gun, and storage
Check:

- Garden-hose connection
- Hose rating
- Gun trigger lock
- Two-hand grip
- Wand storage
- Nozzle retention
- Wheel size
- Pump access
- Drain and winterization procedure
A long hose can reduce how often the machine must be moved.
A longer garden supply hose must still meet the unit’s flow requirement.
Injection injuries are emergencies
A high-pressure stream can penetrate skin through clothing or footwear.
OSHA accident records include injection injuries caused by 3,000- to 3,500-PSI water streams penetrating boots or gloves.

A small puncture can conceal serious internal injury.
