How to Find and Stop Drafts Around Windows and Doors

Close and latch the window or door, identify the exact leaking joint, use weatherstripping where parts move and caulk where components remain stationary, and repair water damage or alignment problems before sealing.

Locate the exact moving joint or stationary crack before sealing anything. Use weatherstripping on operable edges, caulk on fixed gaps, and stop when water damage, failed glazing, combustion equipment, or rental restrictions complicate the work.

Start with the window or door closed

Close and latch it normally. Inspect the sash or door perimeter, meeting rail, threshold, sweep, frame-to-wall joint, locking points, hinges, exterior trim, failed sealant, visible daylight, and loose, folded, hardened, or missing weatherstripping.

ENERGY STAR identifies drafts, visible gaps, exterior odors, dust entry, and peeling paint around frames as common signs of air leakage. [1]

Use safe tests

Visual and light tests

Inspect in daylight for gaps, misalignment, deteriorated seals, and damaged trim. At night, have one person shine a flashlight along the closed edges while another observes from the opposite side.

Paper test

Close a strip of paper at several points around the sash or door. If it pulls out with almost no resistance at one location but grips firmly elsewhere, compression or alignment may be uneven.

Professional testing

A home-energy professional can depressurize the building and locate leakage more systematically. This is useful when drafts appear throughout the home or when hidden attic, basement, or wall penetrations may be the larger problem.

Choose the correct material

Weatherstripping for moving parts

Use weatherstripping where two surfaces must continue moving, including a door perimeter, operable window sash, meeting rail, sliding track, or door bottom.

The material should compress enough to seal without preventing the latch or lock from closing.

Caulk for stationary gaps

Use a compatible sealant for cracks between components that do not move against one another, such as a frame-to-wall joint, stationary trim joint, or small exterior frame gap.

Department of Energy guidance distinguishes caulk for stationary openings from weatherstripping for moving doors and operable windows. [3]

Follow the sealant manufacturer’s instructions for surface preparation, joint size, temperature, tooling, curing, paintability, and interior or exterior use.

Clean and repair before sealing

Remove loose dirt and failed material. Let damp surfaces dry. Repair rot, corrosion, loose fasteners, and water entry first.

Do not seal over active leakage, soft wood, mold caused by ongoing moisture, a damaged frame, a failed insulated-glass unit, a loose threshold, or a warped exterior door. Caulk can conceal a problem without restoring the component.

Do not block drainage paths

Many windows and exterior doors contain designed drainage openings, sill tracks, or weep holes.

Do not fill every visible opening merely because air exists and sealant was on sale. Consult the product manual or manufacturer before sealing an unfamiliar hole in a frame.

Blocking drainage can trap water and cause leakage, corrosion, paint failure, or hidden damage.

Adjust alignment when the gap is uneven

Check for loose hinge screws, a sagging door, a latch that does not pull the door against the seal, a sash that does not lock fully, debris in tracks, damaged rollers, or settled framing.

Tighten only accessible ordinary hardware. Stop if adjustment requires structural work, glass removal, spring-loaded balances, or concealed mechanisms.

Renters should document first

Photograph the gap and send a written maintenance request when the exterior door will not latch, water enters, a window will not lock, the frame is damaged, the condition affects an emergency exit, or permanent modification is prohibited.

Temporary removable weatherstripping may be acceptable, but do not permanently caulk an operable window shut or alter a fire-escape opening.

When air sealing requires more caution

Seek professional guidance when the home has a natural-draft furnace, boiler, fireplace, or water heater; persistent combustion odors; suspected backdrafting; extensive attic or basement leakage; moisture damage; lead-painted surfaces; exterior work at height; structural cracks; or windows required for emergency egress.

Air sealing changes how air moves through a building. It should not obstruct required combustion air, exhaust, or ventilation.
