Can a 100-Watt USB-C Charger Damage Your Phone?
A legitimate 100-watt USB-C Power Delivery charger normally cannot force 100 watts into a phone. The phone and charger negotiate a supported power level, although damaged, counterfeit, incompatible, or overheated equipment can still be unsafe.

A properly functioning 100-watt USB-C charger will not normally force 100 watts into a phone that cannot accept that much power. The wattage printed on the charger is its maximum available output, not an order barked at every device plugged into it.
Compatible USB-C devices and chargers use charging protocols such as USB Power Delivery to agree on a supported voltage and current. Apple permits compatible higher-wattage USB-C power adapters, including Mac laptop adapters, for charging iPhones. What to check first
Confirm that the charger supports USB Power Delivery or another standard supported by the phone, that the cable is undamaged and suitably rated, and that the charger comes from the device manufacturer or a reputable manufacturer using appropriate safety controls.
A 100-watt charger may charge one phone at 20 or 30 watts, another at a lower rate, and a laptop at a much higher rate. Its advertised capacity does not determine the phone’s intake.
Why charger wattage does not equal delivered wattage
USB-C describes the connector. It does not guarantee that every charger, cable, and device supports the same behavior.
With USB Power Delivery, the charger advertises the output combinations it can provide. The connected device requests a supported combination. The charger then supplies the negotiated output. This is why a laptop-class adapter can safely serve a phone when both devices follow compatible charging standards.
The cable still matters
A USB-C cable is not merely passive wire. Its construction and electronic identification can determine the current and wattage it may safely support.
USB-IF’s current labeling distinguishes certified 60-watt and 240-watt USB-C cables. A questionable cable may charge slowly, disconnect intermittently, prevent fast charging, or overheat. [3]
For a phone, a genuine 60-watt cable is usually more capacity than the phone needs. If the same cable will also charge a 100-watt laptop, its rating becomes more important.
When a high-wattage charger can cause trouble
The number on the charger is rarely the real hazard. Common problems include a counterfeit or poorly built adapter, a damaged cable or bent connector, moisture or debris in the charging port, a charger that does not follow the expected USB specification, heat trapped by bedding or clothing, and a failing battery or damaged phone.
Apple warns that damaged charging equipment, moisture, and inadequate ventilation can create fire, electric-shock, or injury risks. [4]
Will fast charging damage the battery?
Fast charging can produce more heat than very slow charging, and heat contributes to battery aging. That does not mean an approved fast charger immediately damages the battery.
Modern phones monitor temperature and battery conditions. They may reduce charging speed, pause charging, or use optimized charging features to limit prolonged time at full charge. Apple notes that a battery can become warm while charging and recommends avoiding charging in ambient temperatures above 95°F, or 35°C. [5]
For better battery longevity, keep the phone uncovered, avoid charging in direct sunlight or a hot vehicle, do not run demanding games unnecessarily while charging, and use optimized or adaptive charging when available.
Stop using the charger when
Disconnect the equipment if the cable, plug, or charging port becomes unusually hot; you smell burning or melting plastic; charging repeatedly connects and disconnects; the connector is loose, bent, corroded, or discolored; the phone reports moisture; the charger sparks or has a cracked enclosure; or the battery begins to swell.
Do not keep testing suspicious equipment on other devices. Replace it or have the phone inspected.

A legitimate 100-watt USB-C Power Delivery charger can generally charge a compatible phone safely. The phone determines how much supported power it accepts.
Compatibility, construction quality, cable condition, ventilation, and temperature matter more than the maximum wattage printed on the adapter.
