Why Does a Door Stick in Humid Weather?

Humidity can raise the moisture content of wood, making a door or frame expand enough to rub. Before sanding, find the exact contact point and check hinges, paint, leaks, frame movement, and seasonal history so you do not remove too much material.

Wood does not remain exactly the same size all year. It exchanges moisture with the surrounding air and tends to move across the grain as its moisture content changes. A small seasonal increase can be enough to make a previously close-fitting door rub the frame.

Penn State Extension explains that wood reaches an equilibrium moisture content related to surrounding temperature and relative humidity. As environmental moisture changes, wood gains or loses moisture and changes dimension. [1]

Confirm that humidity is really the pattern

Record when the door sticks. Seasonal swelling is more likely when it worsens during humid or rainy periods and improves during dry weather. A door that suddenly drags after a roof leak, foundation event, hinge failure, or impact needs a different diagnosis.

Open and close the door slowly. Use a pencil, chalk, or a strip of paper to locate the exact contact point. Common areas include the latch-side top corner, the entire latch edge, the bottom over a rug or floor, and the hinge-side edge.

Check the hinges before removing wood

Loose hinge screws can let the door sag, causing the top latch corner to rub. With the door open, gently lift at the handle and watch for movement at the hinges. Tighten only accessible screws using the correct driver and moderate force.

A screw that spins without tightening may have a stripped hole or damaged framing. Do not substitute an extra-long screw without checking for concealed wiring, plumbing, glass, or the manufacturer’s repair method.

Bent hinges, missing screws, or a door that has pulled away from the frame may require replacement hardware or professional adjustment.

Look for paint and finish buildup

Repeated paint layers can narrow the clearance around a door. Paint may also bridge between the door and stop, creating a sticky seal rather than true wood swelling.

Inspect for tacky, peeling, or compressed paint. Correct the finish according to the coating instructions. Homes built before 1978 may contain lead-based paint; do not dry-sand or scrape suspect coatings without following lead-safe practices.

Inspect for water entry

Exterior doors should be protected by intact flashing, weatherstripping, thresholds, and finish. Dark staining, soft wood, peeling finish, swollen lower rails, musty odor, or recurring wetness can indicate leakage rather than ordinary airborne humidity.

Fix the water source before trimming the door. Removing material from water-damaged wood can hide the symptom while decay continues.

In a rental, report water damage and sticking in writing. Do not alter a fire-rated corridor or entry door without permission.

Use indoor humidity control appropriately

Vent cooking and bathing moisture outdoors where the system is designed to do so. Use air conditioning or a dehumidifier when appropriate for the building and climate. Do not over-dry the home merely to make one door fit; excessive dryness can open joints and cause other movement.

A hygrometer can document relative humidity trends, but it does not measure the door’s internal moisture directly.

Make reversible adjustments first

Clean debris from the threshold and floor. Confirm that a rug or seasonal floor movement is not causing the bottom rub. Adjust or replace worn weatherstripping if it is binding.

For a latch that barely misses the strike plate, correct hinge alignment before moving the strike. A large change in latch position can signal frame movement.

When sanding or planing may be reasonable

If the door is sound, hinges are secure, no leak exists, the contact point is clear, and the seasonal pattern is established, a small amount of material may be removed from the rubbing edge. Work gradually, preserve bevels and fire labels, and reseal bare wood on all exposed surfaces.

Do not trim a door during the most humid day without considering how large the gap may become in winter. Remove the minimum amount necessary.

Fire-rated, exterior, glass, metal-clad, and warranty-covered doors may have specific modification limits. Check the label and manufacturer documentation.

Watch for structural warning signs

Call a qualified contractor or structural professional when several doors and windows change at once, cracks appear or widen, floors slope, the frame separates from the wall, or the door suddenly no longer latches after a building event.

A seasonal sticky door is often a moisture-and-clearance problem. The repair becomes reliable only after you identify whether the moving part is the wood, the hinge, the finish, the frame, or the building itself.
