Why Does a Heat Pump Look Like It Is Smoking in Winter?

A heat pump can release a visible cloud during cold-weather defrost, and that cloud is often water vapor rather than smoke. The system temporarily warms the outdoor coil to melt frost; moisture can then evaporate into visible steam. Persistent heavy icing, burning odor, electrical symptoms, or failure to resume normal heating are different problems.

  • The outdoor fan pauses or the system sounds different for a short period.
  • A white vapor cloud appears and dissipates.
  • Meltwater drains beneath or near the outdoor unit.

  • Thick ice that remains on the coil for long periods.

Steam and smoke are not interchangeable words. Water vapor from defrost should not smell like burning insulation or overheated electrical equipment.

Is ice on the outdoor unit normal?

What about water around the unit?

Why the system may sound strange during defrost
