Why Does My Phone Say Moisture Detected in the Charging Port?

Disconnect the cable immediately, keep the connector facing downward, and let the phone and cable dry in a ventilated room. Do not use rice, heat, compressed air, cotton swabs, or objects inside the port.

The direct answer

A moisture-detection warning means the phone has detected liquid or another abnormal electrical condition in the charging connector, cable, or accessory.

Disconnect the cable immediately and let the connector dry completely. Apple explains that charging a wet Lightning or USB-C connector can corrode the pins and cause permanent damage or unreliable operation. [1]

What to do first

  1. Unplug the cable from the phone.
  2. Disconnect the cable from the power adapter.
  3. Remove a wet case when it can trap moisture.
  4. Hold the phone with the connector facing downward.
  5. Gently tap it against your hand to help excess liquid leave.
  6. Leave the phone in a dry location with ordinary airflow.
  7. Keep the cable and adapter separate until their ends are dry.

Do not shake the device violently or force air into the connector.

How long should it dry?

Apple advises waiting at least 30 minutes before the first wired-charging test. If the alert returns, the connector or cable can need up to 24 hours to dry fully. [1]

Drying time depends on the amount of liquid, port design, humidity, temperature, case design, and whether moisture remains beneath the connector contacts.

Repeatedly reconnecting the cable every few minutes introduces power while moisture may still be present. Give the device time.

Do not put the phone in rice

Apple explicitly advises against placing a wet iPhone in rice because small particles can enter and damage the connector. [1]

Rice also does not provide controlled airflow through the port. It adds dust and fragments to a connector that already has enough problems.

Do not use heat or compressed air

Avoid:

  • Hair dryers.
  • Heat guns.
  • Ovens.
  • Radiators.
  • Clothes dryers.
  • Compressed-air cans.
  • Open flames.

Apple warns against external heat and compressed air. Excessive heat can damage seals, adhesives, the battery, and connector components. [1]

Room-temperature airflow is different from forcing heated air into the port.

Do not insert anything into the connector

Do not use cotton swabs, paper towels, tissues, toothpicks, needles, pins, metal picks, or improvised absorbent material.

Apple specifically warns against placing foreign objects in the connector. [1]

Connector pins are small and easily bent or contaminated.

Check the cable too

Liquid can remain on the accessory rather than inside the phone.

After both components have had time to dry:

  1. Inspect the cable ends.
  2. Look for corrosion, debris, bent metal, or discoloration.
  3. Try another compatible known-good dry cable.
  4. Use a dry adapter and wall outlet.
  5. Stop if the warning returns.

Wireless charging

A supported phone may charge wirelessly while the port dries, provided the back of the phone, case, and charging pad are dry.

Monitor for abnormal heat and stop when the phone was submerged, physically damaged, swollen, hissing, smoking, or separating at the case.

Wireless charging avoids the wet port. It does not repair liquid damage.

Emergency override

Some iPhones offer an emergency override that permits wired charging despite the alert. Apple warns that doing so while the connector is wet can cause corrosion or permanent damage. [1]

Do not use the override for convenience. Use another communication device or wireless charging when safely available.

When service is appropriate

Arrange qualified service when:

  • The alert returns with several dry cables.
  • The port contains visible corrosion.
  • The connector is loose.
  • The phone was submerged.
  • The liquid was salty, sugary, dirty, or chemically contaminated.
  • Charging remains unavailable after a full drying period.
  • The phone becomes hot, swells, smells chemical, hisses, or smokes.
  • Data connections fail after the incident.

Disconnect the cable and allow the phone and accessory to dry with ordinary airflow.
