Streaming & TVs

Practical guides for streaming devices, televisions, HDMI, sound, picture settings, and playback problems.

Streaming & TVs covers televisions, streaming boxes and sticks, game-console video, HDMI connections, soundbars, receivers, picture settings, apps, and playback problems.

When picture or sound fails, trace the path in order: source device, cable, television input, television settings, audio device, and network connection. Change one part at a time. Replacing every cable or resetting every device at once makes it harder to learn which part failed.

For buffering, compare another app on the same device and the same app on another device. That distinguishes an app or service problem from a network or hardware problem.

  • selecting and setting up a television or streaming device
  • HDMI versions, ports, cables, ARC, and eARC
  • picture modes, motion processing, HDR, and input lag
  • soundbars, receivers, lip sync, and missing audio
  • buffering, app crashes, account problems, and remote controls
  • deciding whether a new device is necessary

Write down account names, accessibility settings, picture adjustments, network details, and connected-device labels. A reset may remove all of them without fixing a failing cable, service outage, or account problem.
