Can You Put Glass in the Freezer?

Use only undamaged glass specifically identified for freezing, leave enough empty space for expansion, cool hot food safely before freezing, and avoid sudden temperature changes. Do not freeze liquids in random household jars or eat food from a cracked container.

You can put glass in the freezer when the container is specifically made for freezing, remains free of chips and cracks, has adequate headspace, and is not subjected to a sudden temperature change.

Ordinary glass jars can break at freezer temperatures. The National Center for Home Food Preservation recommends wide-mouth, dual-purpose jars manufactured for both canning and freezing. [1]

What kind of glass is safest?

Look for wording such as freezer-safe, made for freezing, tempered glass, or dual-purpose canning and freezing jar.

Wide-mouth jars are generally preferable because they lack a narrow shoulder where expanding liquid can concentrate stress. University of Minnesota Extension likewise recommends tempered containers identified for both canning and freezing. [2]

Do not assume a reused sauce jar, drinking glass, decorative jar, or takeout container is freezer-safe merely because it survived the refrigerator. A container can appear sturdy while being made from glass that was never designed for repeated freezing or thermal cycling.

Leave room for expansion

Water expands as it freezes. Soup, broth, juice, sauce, milk, and other liquid-rich foods need empty space between the food and lid.

The exact headspace depends on the container shape and contents. National Center guidance uses larger allowances for narrow-neck containers and liquid packs than for dry-packed foods. Its general table calls for up to 1½ inches in some narrow-top quart containers holding liquids. [3]

Do not fill a jar to the rim. Keeping the lid loose while freezing does not compensate for an overfilled or unsuitable container. Expansion can press against the shoulder or wall of the jar before pressure escapes at the top.

Avoid thermal shock

Glass can fracture when one part changes temperature much faster than another.

Do not:

  • pour boiling food into cold glass and immediately freeze it;
  • move hot glass directly into an ice bath;
  • place a frozen jar onto a hot stove, heated countertop, or wet hot surface;
  • pour hot water into a frozen container;
  • heat ordinary frozen glass directly in an oven or microwave unless the manufacturer permits it.

The National Center warns against putting hot glass directly in a freezer or ice water. Cool prepared food safely before packaging and freezing it. [4]

The safe sequence is to cool food promptly using accepted food-safety methods, transfer it to a suitable container, leave the correct headspace, and freeze it without exposing the jar to abrupt temperature extremes.

Inspect the container before use

Discard or repurpose a container if it has chips on the rim, hairline cracks, deep scratches, a warped lid, impact damage, or unexplained leakage.

A small flaw can become the starting point for a larger fracture as the container cools and the contents expand. Do not rely on a lid to hold a damaged rim together.

How to freeze food in glass

  1. Confirm the container is rated for freezing.
  2. Inspect it for damage.
  3. Cool hot food promptly using safe food-cooling methods.
  4. Transfer the food without overfilling.
  5. Leave the headspace recommended for the contents and jar shape.
  6. Wipe the rim and attach a compatible lid.
  7. Label the food and freezing date.
  8. Place the jar upright where it will not be struck.
  9. Allow air circulation around newly added containers until frozen.

Do not stack unfrozen jars precariously or wedge them against a freezer mechanism. Glass that is safe under normal use can still break after being dropped or struck.

What if the jar cracks?

Do not eat food from a cracked or shattered container. Tiny glass fragments may be difficult to see.

Wear protective gloves, lift out large fragments carefully, and clean the freezer according to its manual. Do not run warm water over frozen shards or handle them with bare hands.

How should frozen glass be thawed?

Move the container to the refrigerator and allow gradual thawing. Place it in a bowl or tray in case the jar was damaged during freezing.

Do not use a container whose manufacturer does not permit reheating. Freezer-safe, microwave-safe, and oven-safe are separate claims, because apparently glass needed its own small bureaucracy of permissions.

Bottom line

Use only undamaged glass intended for freezing. Prefer wide-mouth freezer-safe jars, leave sufficient headspace, cool food before freezing, and avoid rapid temperature changes. A random pasta-sauce jar may survive several freezes, but anecdotal survival is not a materials standard.

Limits and cautions

  • Headspace depends on the food, container size, and container shape; there is no single correct allowance for every jar.
