Used Washing Machine Inspection Checklist: Fill, Wash, Drain, Spin, and Leak Test

Do not buy a used washer without verifying the exact model and serial number, checking recalls, inspecting the cabinet, drum, gasket, hoses, and valves, and running a complete fill, wash, drain, and balanced high-speed spin cycle. Include delivery, hoses, installation, and disposal in the real cost.

What to know

  • A dry spin or startup video does not test valves, pumps, pressure sensing, drainage, or leaks.
  • Run a complete water-connected cycle with a balanced load.
  • Bearing roar, drum play, leaks, recurring errors, or unrepaired recalls are walk-away signs.
  • Transport hardware and installation parts can materially change the real cost.

A used washing machine must complete the entire job before purchase: fill, wash or tumble, drain, and perform a balanced high-speed spin without leaking, throwing errors, or producing abnormal mechanical noise.

A five-second video of the drum turning proves only that the drum turned for five seconds. Many expensive failures wait patiently for the drain or spin stage.

Record the exact model and serial number

Ask for a clear photograph of the manufacturer label.

Use it to verify capacity, dimensions, voltage, installation clearances, drain requirements, original features, service documentation, replacement-part availability, and recall status.

Do not rely on a listing such as “large washer” or “heavy-duty washer.” Those are descriptions, not identities.

Search recalls

Search the CPSC database using the exact brand, model, and serial range. [1]

Washer recalls have addressed hazards including excessive vibration, short circuits, and fire. Recall coverage may apply only to certain production ranges.

Obtain documentation that the required remedy was completed. A statement that the machine never caused trouble does not replace a recall repair.

Confirm that it fits

Measure overall width, height, depth, door or lid clearance, hose clearance, hallway and doorway access, stair turns, laundry closet space, pedestal height, and dryer clearance.

Front-loading doors may be reversible only on specific models. Top-load lids need overhead room.

Also confirm that the floor and location are suitable for the filled appliance.

Inspect the exterior

Look for rust at lower seams, water staining, cabinet swelling, impact damage, missing feet, cracked controls, damaged cord or plug, corroded water inlets, a damaged drain hose, and evidence of insects or rodents.

Inspect behind and beneath the unit with a flashlight where this can be done safely.

Freshly cleaned surfaces are welcome, but they are not the same thing as a leak-free machine. Civilization has known about wiping things down for some time.

Inspect drum, basket, and gasket

For a front-loader, pull back the gasket and look for tears, mold, residue, trapped objects, and water. Rotate the drum slowly, listen for rubbing, and gently check for excessive vertical play. Inspect the door hinge and latch.

For a top-loader, inspect the basket, agitator or impeller, lid, latch, dispensers, and excessive side-to-side movement.

A strong musty odor can indicate persistent residue or hidden moisture. Cleaning may help, but severe inaccessible contamination changes the value of the appliance.

Run a complete water-connected cycle

A meaningful test requires suitable hot and cold water where applicable, a secure drain, a correct outlet, enough time, and a balanced test load.

During fill

Verify that required valves admit water, listen for prolonged buzzing or hammering, check hose connections, confirm that filling stops at a plausible level, and watch for error codes.

During wash or tumble

Listen for grinding, scraping, knocking, and squealing. Confirm the intended agitation or reversing action. Inspect dispensers and the door seal for leaks.

During drain

Confirm strong, continuous discharge. Listen for a struggling or grinding pump. Check that water does not remain in the tub. Inspect the drain hose and floor.

During spin

Use a balanced load. Listen as speed increases, watch for cabinet movement, check for deep bearing roar, confirm that the cycle completes, and inspect again for leaks.

Do not create a deliberately unbalanced load. The purpose is to evaluate the washer, not reenact its eventual destruction.

Interpret sounds carefully

Deep roaring that rises with spin speed, metal grinding, hard impacts with a balanced load, pump grinding, squealing, drum rubbing, or severe cabinet movement are concerning.

Water-valve clicks, door-lock operation, pump hum, motor-tone changes, and brief load-balancing movements can be normal. Compare unusual sounds with official documentation for the exact model.

Check the final result

At the end, the load should not remain saturated, the tub should be substantially drained, the door or lid should unlock, no error should remain, no water should be beneath the unit, and the cabinet should not have crossed the room under its own ambitions.

A washer that finishes only after being restarted did not pass the test.

Installation and transport parts

Determine whether the sale includes or requires new fill hoses, drain hose, washers, approved drain extension, pedestal, stacking kit, drain pan, delivery, stair labor, and old-machine removal.

For a front-loader, ask for the original transit bolts. Moving procedures are model-specific; follow the manufacturer rather than restraining the suspended drum with rope and confidence.

An EnergyGuide label provides estimated annual energy use and operating cost under standardized assumptions and compares the product with similar models. The FTC administers the Energy Labeling Rule. [2]

ENERGY STAR publishes criteria and metrics for certified clothes washers. [3] Actual household cost depends on utility rates, cycle choice, temperature, load size, and frequency.

Walk away when

Reject the washer when the seller withholds model information, it cannot be water-tested, it leaks, cannot drain or spin, has excessive drum play, severe rust, damaged wiring, recurring errors, unavailable parts, or an unrepaired recall.

Bottom line

A worthwhile used washer must perform the full cycle, not merely turn on. Verify its identity and recall status, test every operating stage, inspect for leaks and bearing noise, and include all transport and installation costs.

  • A normal test cycle cannot reveal every intermittent or future failure.
  • Installation requirements and moving procedures vary by model.
  • Energy and water estimates depend on standardized assumptions and do not equal a household’s exact cost.
