Webcam Not Working? Check the Shutter, Permissions, App, and Driver
Start with the physical shutter or camera key, then test the camera in the operating system’s own app. If it works there, fix the affected app; if it fails everywhere, check permissions, connections, updates, and the device driver.

A webcam failure can come from four different layers: the camera may be physically blocked, the operating system may deny access, one app may be misconfigured, or the device may not be detected at all. Checking those layers in order is faster and safer than uninstalling drivers immediately.
Check the physical controls first
Look closely at the camera opening. Many laptops now have a sliding privacy shutter that covers the lens. Others use a keyboard key, function-key combination, or side switch to disable the camera electronically. Microsoft specifically recommends checking these controls before deeper troubleshooting because a disabled camera may disappear from apps or display a crossed-out camera symbol. [1]
Also remove any sticker, case edge, monitor light, or accessory that blocks the lens. If the camera image is merely dark rather than absent, improve the room lighting and clean the lens with a dry, soft cloth.
Test outside the video-call app
Close every meeting, browser, recording, and messaging app that could be using the camera. Then open the operating system’s built-in camera application.
- If the camera works in the built-in app, the hardware and basic driver path are probably functioning. Focus on the original app’s selected camera, permissions, updates, and account settings.
- If the camera fails in every app, continue with system permissions and device detection.

Review camera permissions
On Windows, check the camera privacy settings and confirm that device access, app access, and desktop-app access are enabled where appropriate. Store apps and traditional desktop applications can be governed by different switches. [1]
On macOS, camera access is controlled per application in Privacy and Security settings. An app that was denied earlier may need permission before it can use the camera. [2]
Do not grant camera access to software you do not recognize. A legitimate troubleshooting step is to enable the specific app you intend to use, not to give every application unrestricted access.
Verify the selected camera
Video-call applications often remember the last camera used. If a disconnected USB webcam, virtual camera, capture card, or phone-camera feature remains selected, the preview may be black even though the built-in webcam works.
Open the app’s video settings and choose the intended camera explicitly. If more than one entry has a similar name, test each one while the built-in camera app is closed.
Check a USB webcam connection
For an external camera, reconnect the cable directly to the computer. Avoid an unpowered hub during diagnosis. Try another known-working USB port and inspect the plug and cable for damage. If possible, test the webcam on a second computer. A camera that fails on two known-good systems is more likely to have a hardware or cable fault.
Do not force a USB plug or use a visibly damaged port. If the connector becomes hot, loose, or discolored, stop using it.
Restart and update normally
Restart the computer rather than only closing the lid or waking it from sleep. Then install ordinary operating-system and application updates. A recent update may also offer an optional camera-driver update.
If the problem began immediately after a driver change, use the manufacturer’s documented rollback or reinstall procedure. Microsoft’s guidance includes checking Device Manager, scanning for hardware changes, updating the driver, and in some cases rolling back or reinstalling it. [1]
Avoid downloading a driver from an advertisement, generic driver site, or unrelated forum. Use Windows Update or the computer or webcam manufacturer’s support page.
Treat security software carefully
Security software can block camera access, but permanently disabling it is not a reasonable fix. Check whether the program has an explicit webcam-protection setting or application permission. If a temporary test is necessary, follow the security vendor’s documentation, disconnect from unnecessary networks, restore protection immediately, and record what changed.
A work or school device may have camera access blocked by policy. Do not try to remove management controls. Ask the administrator whether the restriction is intentional.
Know when the problem is hardware
Professional service is appropriate when the camera never appears in the device list, the image cuts in and out when the screen moves, the lens assembly is damaged, the USB socket is loose, or the camera fails on multiple computers. On a laptop, an internal display cable can also carry the camera connection, so a fault may require opening the display assembly.
The useful question is not simply whether the webcam works. It is where the camera path stops working: before detection, at permission, inside one app, or at the image itself. That answer determines the repair.
