Why Does My Toilet Keep Running?

Remove the tank lid and observe one full flush. Keep your hands clear of moving parts and look for a flapper that does not settle flat, a chain caught under the flapper, a chain so short that it holds the flapper open, water spilling over the overflow tube, a float rubbing the tank wall, or a fill valve that continues hissing after the tank appears full.
Avoid in-tank cleaning tablets while diagnosing the problem. Some chemical products can shorten the life of rubber and plastic tank components.
Perform a dye test
A silent leak may not be obvious. EPA recommends adding a few drops of food coloring to the tank and waiting without flushing. If colored water appears in the bowl, water is leaking from the tank. [1]
The likely path is through the flapper or flush-valve seal. Flush after the test so dye does not remain in the fixture.
Check the flapper
The flapper is the rubber or plastic seal that lifts when you flush. It may leak because it is warped, cracked, brittle, coated with mineral deposits, the wrong size, or misaligned on its mounting points.
Clean minor residue and reseat it. If it remains distorted or stiff, replace it with a part matching the toilet or flush-valve size. Take the old part or clear photographs to the store. Adjust the chain
The chain should have a small amount of slack when the flapper is closed. If it is too tight, the flapper may never seal. If it is too loose, it can tangle or become trapped underneath.

Check the water level and overflow tube
The tank should stop filling below the top of the overflow tube, usually at the manufacturer’s fill mark. If water continuously enters the overflow tube, lower the float setting, confirm the float moves freely, inspect the fill valve, and make sure the refill tube is clipped above the overflow opening rather than shoved deeply into the tube.
A refill tube inserted too far can create siphoning that continues after the valve closes.
Inspect the fill valve
A fill valve can fail because of mineral buildup, a damaged seal, or a worn internal mechanism. Some can be cleaned or fitted with a replacement seal; others are replaced as an assembly.
Close the toilet’s supply valve and flush to empty most of the tank before removal. Follow the replacement manufacturer’s instructions and do not overtighten fittings against the tank.

When the problem is not just a tank part
Call a plumber or maintenance professional when the shutoff valve does not work, the supply line leaks, the tank or bowl is cracked, water appears around the base, the toilet rocks, bolts are heavily corroded, or the leak continues after correct tank-part replacement.
Water around the base may involve a supply connection, tank bolt, cracked fixture, or failed seal beneath the toilet. Do not assume the flapper caused it.
Renters
Notify the landlord or maintenance department in writing if fixture repairs are not authorized under the lease. Document when the running began, whether it is continuous, whether water appears outside the tank, and whether the tenant pays the water bill.
