How to Choose a Space Heater

Choose a traceable laboratory-listed heater with automatic tip-over and overtemperature protection, a stable floor location, enough clear space, and an electrical load suitable for direct connection to the wall outlet.

Tip-over and overheating protection

A tip-over switch should stop heating when the appliance falls. This is especially important around children, pets, narrow walking paths, and lightweight furniture.

Choose the heater style

Fan-forced or ceramic heaters warm air quickly but create fan noise and require clear intake and outlet space.

Oil-filled radiators are generally quiet and provide steady heat but are heavier, slower to warm, and can have hot surfaces.

Radiant or infrared heaters warm people and nearby surfaces directly but create concentrated hot areas and still require full clearances.

Electrical load

Many household heaters draw close to the practical load of an ordinary 120-volt receptacle at maximum output.

Do not connect one to an extension cord, power strip, cube tap, plug adapter, or smart plug unless the heater manufacturer explicitly permits the exact device and load.

Stop using the heater when the plug or outlet becomes warm, the breaker trips, the plug fits loosely, the cord discolors, power flickers, or a burning odor appears.

Keep the heater at least three feet from bedding, curtains, clothing, upholstered furniture, paper, cardboard, rugs where prohibited, trash, pet beds, and children’s toys.

When the room cannot provide that space, do not use a portable heater there.

Controls

Useful controls include an adjustable thermostat, several heat levels, a physical power switch, a timer that defaults safely, a clear status light, an overheat indicator, and a child lock where appropriate.

A thermostat can reduce unnecessary cycling but does not make unattended operation safe.

Be cautious with remote or smart control that can energize the heater when nobody has confirmed that the area remains clear.

Bathrooms and wet locations
