Why Do Lights Dim When an Appliance Starts?
A very brief, slight dip can occur when a motor or compressor draws extra current at startup. Dimming that is deep, prolonged, worsening, affects many circuits, or comes with heat, odor, buzzing, or brightening needs electrical or utility investigation.

- The pattern matters: one light on one circuit suggests a local load issue, while whole-home changes can involve service or utility connections.
- Lights that brighten as others dim can be more concerning than a small uniform dip because a loose neutral may cause uneven voltage.
- Do not solve repeated dimming by installing a larger breaker or bypassing protection.
Some appliances draw substantially more current for a moment when a motor, compressor, transformer, or heating element starts. That temporary demand can cause a small voltage drop, which appears as a quick dip in nearby lighting. A slight momentary change is different from repeated deep dimming, flickering, or lights that become unusually bright.
Observe how large the change is
Write down which appliance starts, how long the dimming lasts, and which lights respond. A barely visible dip lasting a fraction of a second when a large air conditioner starts may have a different cause and urgency from lights that pulse for several seconds whenever a refrigerator cycles.
Check whether the change occurs:
- Only in one lamp.
- In several lights on one branch circuit.
- In one room plus the appliance circuit.
- Across the entire home.
- In neighboring homes at the same time.
The broader the pattern, the farther upstream the cause may be.
Why motors cause a brief dip
An electric motor at rest does not yet generate the electrical effects that limit current during normal operation. Starting it can create a short inrush that is several times the running current. Compressors, pumps, air conditioners, refrigerators, shop tools, and some vacuum cleaners can therefore cause a momentary voltage drop.
The branch circuit, feeder, and service all have resistance. More current through that resistance produces more voltage drop. Long runs, undersized conductors, weak connections, and already-heavy loading can make the effect larger.
A start capacitor or other appliance component that is deteriorating can also make a motor take longer to start, increasing the visible dip.
Check the lamp and fixture first
If only one lamp dims, test a known-good bulb that matches the fixture’s rating. Confirm the bulb is seated correctly with power off and cool. A failing LED driver, incompatible dimmer, loose lamp plug, or worn fixture contact can react to ordinary voltage changes more dramatically than other lights.
Do not exceed the fixture’s wattage rating or use a bulb that the dimmer manufacturer does not support.
Look for electrical warning signs
The Electrical Safety Foundation International identifies dimming or flickering lights, warm or discolored outlets, burning odor, buzzing, and shocks as signs that may indicate wiring or overload problems. [1]
Stop using the affected appliance and arrange an electrician when dimming comes with:
- A hot outlet, switch, plug, panel, or cord.
- Burning smell, smoke, or discoloration.
- Crackling or buzzing from fixed wiring.
- Repeated breaker trips.
- A loose receptacle or visible arcing.
- Lights that become very bright while others dim.
Call emergency services for smoke, active fire, or dangerous arcing. Do not touch a wet or damaged electrical panel.
Why brightening can matter
In a typical split-phase residential service, a loose neutral can allow voltage to shift unevenly between the two sides of the service. One group of lights may dim while another brightens. That pattern can damage equipment and should be treated as an urgent electrician or utility issue.
Do not keep cycling appliances to reproduce the effect. Disconnect sensitive electronics when it is safe to do so and contact the utility or a licensed electrician.
Separate appliance trouble from house wiring
If one appliance causes the problem, note whether it sounds slow, struggles, hums, or repeatedly restarts. A service technician may need to evaluate the appliance’s motor, capacitor, compressor, cord, plug, and current draw.
If several large appliances cause dimming, an electrician may evaluate circuit loading, conductor size, connections, panel condition, service capacity, and voltage drop. The utility may need to inspect the service drop, transformer, meter connection, or neighborhood supply.
Do not make these shortcuts
Never replace a breaker with a larger rating to stop trips or dimming. The breaker protects the wiring. Never double-tap terminals, move conductors inside the panel, or tighten service connections unless you are qualified and authorized. Parts of a panel can remain energized even when the main breaker is off.
Do not use a heavy appliance on a power strip or lightweight extension cord as a diagnostic experiment.
When a quick dip may be ordinary
A slight, consistent, very brief change that occurs only when a large motor starts, produces no other warning signs, and has not worsened may reflect ordinary starting demand. Document it and compare it over time.
The important threshold is not whether the light changed by any amount. It is whether the voltage behavior is small and stable or deep, prolonged, uneven, worsening, or accompanied by heat and noise. The second pattern needs measurement, not reassurance.
Limits and cautions
- Only measurements at the panel and service can distinguish normal starting voltage drop from wiring, service, appliance, or utility faults.
