Why Is My Tap Water Cloudy or Milky?

Fill a clean clear glass with cold tap water and watch it for several minutes. If it clears from the bottom upward, tiny air bubbles are the likely cause. If it remains cloudy, settles particles, changes color, smells unusual, or appears during an advisory, contact the water provider or another appropriate authority.

Run the clear-glass test

Use a clean glass with no soap residue.

  1. Run the cold water briefly.
  2. Fill the glass.
  3. Place it on a light-colored surface.
  4. Watch from the side.
  5. Note whether clearing begins at the bottom, the top, or not at all.
  6. Photograph the glass after one and five minutes.

Air-bubble cloudiness typically clears from the bottom because bubbles rise toward the surface.

Why air makes water look white

Water can hold dissolved gases. A change in pressure or temperature can allow the gas to form many tiny bubbles after the water leaves the pipe.

Those bubbles scatter light, making the glass look white or opaque. As they escape, the water becomes clear again.

The condition can become more noticeable during cold weather, after water-main or plumbing work, following a pressure change, or at one faucet with an aerator that introduces additional air.

Compare faucets

Test cold water at the affected faucet, hot water at the same faucet, cold water elsewhere in the home, and another faucet with a different aerator when available.

The pattern helps narrow the source:

  • One faucet only: The aerator or local plumbing may be introducing air or debris.
  • Hot water only: The water heater or hot-water piping deserves inspection.
  • Every cold tap: The building supply or public system is more likely involved.
  • Neighbors affected: Contact the water provider.

Do not dismantle rental plumbing without permission.

If particles settle instead

Suspended material may remain throughout the glass, settle toward the bottom, leave visible grains, or appear brown, orange, gray, or another color.

Appearance alone cannot identify the material. It may involve mineral scale, corrosion products, sediment, disturbance after utility work, or another condition requiring the water provider or a laboratory.

Do not assume visible particles are harmless merely because they eventually settle.

Contact the water provider when

Contact the public water provider when:

  • the cloudiness does not clear;
  • several cold faucets are affected;
  • neighbors report the same change;
  • a main break or utility work occurred;
  • pressure changed suddenly;
  • the water is brown, red, black, blue, or green;
  • a chemical, fuel, sewage, or rotten-egg odor appears;
  • an advisory is active;
  • illness is suspected.

Follow any boil-water or do-not-use advisory exactly. Boiling does not remove every possible chemical contaminant.

Private wells

Private-well owners are responsible for maintaining and testing their systems.

Persistent cloudiness can involve sediment, a damaged component, flooding, runoff, treatment failure, or a change in groundwater. Use a state-certified laboratory and local health or environmental guidance rather than a color-based home diagnosis.

Do not taste unknown water to determine whether it is safe. Taste buds are not a laboratory and have never filed a quality-assurance report.

What about a filter?

A filter must be matched to a verified contaminant or treatment objective.

Sediment filters, activated carbon, reverse osmosis, and microbiological treatment perform different jobs. Air bubbles require no filter at all.

Buying a random pitcher because water looked theatrical for thirty seconds spends money without identifying the cause.

When plumbing help is appropriate

Use a plumber or building maintenance when only hot water is affected, one fixture remains cloudy after its aerator is checked, pipes spit air repeatedly, the water heater is leaking or overheating, sediment appeared after internal plumbing work, or the issue is confined to one building while the utility reports normal conditions.

Bottom line

Use the clear-glass test. Bottom-to-top clearing within several minutes strongly suggests air bubbles. Persistent cloudiness, sediment, color, odor, an active advisory, or a neighborhood-wide change requires utility, plumbing, or laboratory follow-up.
