Laptop Connected to Wi-Fi but No Internet? Test the Connection in Order
A Wi-Fi connection only proves that the laptop joined the local wireless network. Test another website, another device, the router, and the laptop’s network settings in that order to locate the actual break.

- Restarting the modem and router can help, but factory-resetting a router is a last resort because it erases the network configuration.
- A captive portal, disabled adapter, stale address, DNS problem, VPN, or firewall can make a laptop appear connected while internet access fails.
A laptop can show a strong Wi-Fi signal and still have no internet because Wi-Fi and internet service are different links. Wi-Fi connects the laptop to the router. The router then has to reach the modem or gateway, obtain service from the internet provider, and send traffic to the correct destination.
The fastest repair method is not to reset everything. It is to determine which link is broken.
First, define the size of the problem
Open two unrelated websites and one internet-dependent app. If only one site or app fails, the laptop probably still has internet access. The failing service may be down, blocked, signed out, or affected by a browser extension.
Next, test another device on the same Wi-Fi network. The result divides the problem into two useful branches:
- If every device fails, focus on the modem, router, provider, or building network.
- If only the laptop fails, focus on that laptop’s adapter, stored network profile, VPN, firewall, address, or DNS settings.
Microsoft’s Windows networking guidance uses the same basic distinction: a computer may be connected to the local Wi-Fi network while the network itself lacks internet access. [1]
Check for a sign-in page
Hotels, libraries, airports, apartment buildings, schools, and guest networks often use a captive portal. The laptop joins Wi-Fi first, then requires a browser sign-in or acceptance screen.
Open a new browser window and visit a plain, non-sensitive website. Do not enter private information into a page whose network name or certificate looks suspicious. If a sign-in page appears, complete it and retry the original site.
Restart the correct equipment
For a home network, save work and restart the laptop first. If other devices also lack internet, restart the modem or gateway and router according to the provider or manufacturer instructions. When they are separate devices, power them down, wait briefly, start the modem first, wait for it to finish reconnecting, and then start the router.
Do not press a recessed factory-reset button unless you are prepared to rebuild the network name, password, provider settings, guest network, and any custom configuration. A normal power restart and a factory reset are not the same operation.
Check the laptop before changing advanced settings
Confirm airplane mode is off and Wi-Fi is on. If the laptop has a physical wireless switch or function-key shortcut, check it too. Disconnect from the network and reconnect carefully using the correct password.
Temporarily pause a VPN only when you understand how to restore it. A VPN failure can block traffic even though Wi-Fi remains connected. On a work or school device, do not remove management software, certificates, or security controls; contact the administrator instead.
If the operating system offers a built-in network troubleshooter, run it before manually changing addresses. The troubleshooter can identify a disabled adapter, missing gateway, or address-assignment failure without requiring guesswork. [1]
Forget and rejoin the network
A damaged stored profile can preserve an obsolete password, security mode, or connection setting. Forgetting the Wi-Fi network and joining it again creates a fresh profile.
Use this only after confirming that you know the network password. On a managed network, forgetting the profile may also remove organization-provided authentication details.
Separate DNS trouble from total connection failure
DNS converts names such as example.com into network addresses. When DNS fails, apps may report that sites cannot be found even though the connection itself is active.
A practical clue is that some apps work while ordinary website names fail. Restarting the router and laptop may refresh the assigned DNS information. Avoid copying random DNS commands or addresses from an untrusted forum. If the provider has a documented DNS procedure, follow that documentation.
Check the router securely
If the problem affects every device, inspect the router or gateway status using its official app or local administration page. The Federal Trade Commission recommends changing default administrator credentials, using WPA2 or WPA3 encryption, keeping router software updated, and logging out after making changes. [2]
Do not expose the router’s administration page to the public internet merely to troubleshoot it. Also avoid disabling the firewall, encryption, or password protection as a test.
When to contact the provider or repair service
Contact the internet provider when the modem shows a service fault, every device is offline, an outage is reported, or the connection repeatedly drops after documented restarts. Contact the laptop manufacturer or a repair technician when the wireless adapter disappears, the computer cannot see any networks that other devices can see, or the problem follows the laptop to multiple known-good networks.
A connected Wi-Fi icon is useful evidence, but it is only evidence that the first link succeeded. Testing from the application outward keeps a simple outage from turning into an unnecessary factory reset.
