Why Do LED Light Bulbs Flicker?
LED bulbs can flicker when their electronic drivers receive uneven power, especially with an incompatible dimmer. Start by checking whether the bulb is dimmable, testing a compatible bulb, and noting whether one lamp or the entire circuit is affected.

Flicker only when dimmed

If adjustment does not help, try a compatible bulb listed by the dimmer manufacturer or replace the dimmer with one designed for the bulb type.
One bulb flickers on a normal switch
Turn the light off, allow the bulb to cool, and make sure it is seated correctly. If the fixture and bulb are rated for one another, test a known-good bulb.
If the replacement works normally, the original bulb or its driver was likely the problem. If both flicker, investigate the fixture, switch, socket, or circuit instead of buying a third bulb and hoping the household has reached statistical closure.
Several bulbs flicker together
When multiple fixtures change brightness at the same time, the cause may be upstream of the bulbs. Possibilities include:
- a dimmer controlling an incompatible load;
- a loose switch or connection;
- a heavily cycling appliance on the circuit;
- a neutral or service problem;
- unstable utility voltage.
Widespread flicker, especially when lights brighten as well as dim, deserves more caution than one failing lamp.
Flicker with buzzing, heat, odor, or sparks
Turn the circuit off if it can be done safely and contact a qualified electrician. A hot switch plate, burning odor, crackling, arcing, or visible discoloration is not a bulb-comparison experiment.
Do not keep operating a fixture that shows signs of overheating.
Flicker that a camera sees but your eyes do not

Does flicker create a health risk?

- Note whether the lamp is on a dimmer.
- Confirm the bulb is labeled dimmable when applicable.
- Try the bulb at full brightness.
- Test one known-compatible bulb.
- Check the dimmer manufacturer’s compatibility list.
- Adjust low-end trim only according to instructions.
- Stop if there is heat, odor, sparking, or widespread circuit behavior.
- Call an electrician when the issue is not isolated to one replaceable bulb.
