Power Strip vs. Surge Protector: What Is the Difference?

A plain power strip mainly adds outlets. A surge protector adds circuitry designed to clamp certain voltage spikes. Similar appearance does not prove surge protection, so check the label, certification, ratings, and replacement guidance.

What to know

  • A row of outlets and an on-off switch does not automatically mean surge protection.
  • Surge protectors address brief voltage events; they do not create unlimited electrical capacity.
  • Check the device label for certification, electrical rating, and surge-protection information.
  • Neither product should be daisy-chained or used for loads prohibited by its instructions.

A power strip primarily gives you more outlets. A surge protector also contains components intended to limit certain brief voltage surges before they reach connected equipment. The two products can look nearly identical, which is why the switch, shape, and number of sockets are poor ways to identify them. [1]

The distinction matters, but it does not make either device a source of unlimited power.

What a plain power strip does

A basic power strip is essentially a cord-connected set of receptacles. It may include:

  • an on-off switch;
  • a resettable circuit breaker or other overcurrent protection;
  • a grounded plug;
  • spacing for larger adapters;
  • USB charging ports.

Those features do not necessarily mean the strip provides surge protection. Read the product label and documentation.

What a surge protector adds

A listed surge protective device contains circuitry designed to respond to transient overvoltage. UL explains the basic difference by noting that a protector can clamp a surge, while a plain strip simply distributes power. Cord-connected surge protectors for general use are commonly evaluated under UL 1449. [1] [2]

This does not mean the protector absorbs every possible electrical event. Protection depends on the type and size of the surge, installation, grounding, product condition, and design.

How to tell which one you have

Look on the underside, back, cord tag, packaging, or manual for:

  • the words surge protector or surge protective device;
  • a recognized certification mark;
  • a model number;
  • an electrical rating in volts, amps, or watts;
  • a surge rating or other surge-performance information;
  • a protection-status indicator and an explanation of what it means;
  • instructions for replacement.

A light labeled “protected” is more informative than a generic illuminated power switch, but even indicator meanings vary. If the documentation cannot be found and the device is old or unidentified, do not assume that expensive electronics are protected.

What the joule number means

Many retail surge protectors advertise a joule rating. Broadly, it describes an energy-handling measure used for the protective components. A larger number is not a complete quality score. Response characteristics, voltage protection level, certification, wiring quality, grounding, and the condition of the protector also matter.

Treat a joule rating as one specification, not as permission to ignore every other one.

Surge protection does not increase circuit capacity

A 15-amp wall circuit remains a 15-amp circuit after a surge protector is plugged into it. The strip’s outlets share its total rating. Filling every socket with low-power chargers may be acceptable within the product’s rating; attaching several heaters, cooking appliances, or other high-load devices may not be.

CPSC warns that extension cords, power strips, and surge protectors must be able to carry the current required by the connected equipment. Faulty or undersized products can create fire and shock hazards. [3]

Never use the number of available sockets as the load calculation.

Do not daisy-chain strips

Plugging one power strip into another creates additional connections and makes it easier to exceed ratings or conceal an overloaded setup. Product labels commonly prohibit connection to another relocatable power tap or extension cord.

If you regularly need several chained strips, the room probably needs a better outlet plan rather than a more elaborate electrical centipede.

When should a surge protector be replaced?

There is no single replacement interval for every product. Protective components can degrade after surge events, and some devices signal when protection is no longer active. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Replace a unit immediately if it is damaged, scorched, cracked, loose, buzzing, or hot.

A protector with no working status indicator and no available documentation is difficult to trust for valuable equipment.

What should be plugged into one?

Surge protectors are commonly used for computers, televisions, game consoles, network equipment, and similar electronics. High-power appliances should be connected only as their manufacturers direct. Space heaters, for example, should be plugged directly into a wall outlet rather than into a strip. [4]

Bottom line

A power strip adds outlets. A surge protector adds transient-voltage protection, but it does not add circuit capacity or make prohibited high-load connections safe. Identify the product from its label and documentation, stay within its electrical rating, avoid daisy-chaining, and replace questionable equipment instead of trusting an unlabeled plastic box with everything on your desk.

Limits and cautions

  • Surge-protection designs and indicators vary by product.
  • No plug-in device can guarantee protection from every surge or a direct lightning strike.
  • Users must follow product labeling and the connected equipment’s instructions.
