Why Is My Freezer Frosting Up?

  • Warm humid air is entering
  • Moist food is uncovered
  • Door does not seal
  • Airflow is blocked
  • Defrost water cannot drain
  • Automatic defrost is failing

Check:

  • Ice package blocking closure
  • drawer protruding
  • shelf misaligned
  • bin overloaded
  • alarm disabled
  • child opening door
  • object on hinge side

A door can appear shut while the gasket remains open.

Gasket

Inspect for:

  • Tear
  • crack
  • fold
  • food residue
  • hard section
  • loose corner
  • gap
  • mold or grime

Clean with manufacturer-approved method.

Replace damaged gaskets.

Do not stretch, heat, or lubricate unless the manual instructs it.

Level and alignment

Some appliances rely on a slight rearward tilt or hinge adjustment.

Safe defrosting

If the manual supports owner defrost:

  1. Protect food.
